Jeff Young's Dynamic Marching & Movement DVDs
should be in every high school Music Department's Library. Every director, as well as their students,
should have these available to study and learn today's current styles and
techniques. One of the great pluses in
these DVDs for high school students is that the demonstrations are all done by
average high school students demonstrating proper work ethic, yet with some
flaws as they are developing their skills.
The DVDs are a must for all university Marching Band Techniques methods
class. Students should not only view
these DVDs, but be required to take detailed notes to establish their own
instructional skills. The instruction
presented was a tremendous eye opener for students in my class who did not
understand the fine detail required to acquire excellence in student's marching

I can't imagine trying to create a successful marching band program without the assistance of Jeff Young. Unfortunately, some directors had to "get beat" before they believed what a difference Jeff and his consultants can make. The Dynamic Marching approach is the most physiological and educational approach to marching fundamentals I've ever experienced. While it does give bands a competitive edge, the philosophy behind the program is about being the best you can be. If that wins...Great...but more than anything Dynamic Marching gives students a means to success. Jeff and his consultants teach the fundamentals of motion using the students vernacular as well as physiological terms they hear in science class. All of a sudden marching fundamentals are cool and not just about "rolling the feet".
I have thirty-four years of performance, teaching and design experience. Only in the past three years have I been able to help marching bands create a "total package". While the Dynamic Marching concept may seem advanced, I've found if you extract what you're capable of doing the first year the students get comfortable with the "new marching style". Then the following year it's possible to implement the broader scope of the Dynamic Marching methods. By the third and fourth year the upper classmen can't believe they approached the fundamentals of motion any other way.
