Choosing a drill writer is like choosing a new suit. When you buy
a new suit, you have to like the way it looks on your RIGHT NOW, you have to
know that it is your style, and you have to think about whether or not you will
want to wear it two years from now. You also need to think about the
quality vs. price issues. When you choose a drill writer you need to
think about THIS SEASON and the future as well as cost vs. quality.
Always ask to see samples of previous years in which that person has designed
for a group your size. Never hesitate to ask for references either.
Just keep in mind that just because a band "goes in a new direction"
and lets their drill writer go does not necessarily mean that he or she is not
good. Band directors and drill writers are constantly changing and
forming new relationships. Don't be afraid to take a chance on a new guy
either! (unless you are a BOA finalist!)
